Detoxification can mean many different things depending on your starting point. If you are a heavy drinker and you trying to quit the booze then detoxification to you might mean alcohol detoxification. The same goes with drugs such as heroin, cannabis, or even nicotine. But in terms of the content of this site detoxification is about healthy living, trying to avoid poisons, and helping your body to eliminate those poisons that are unavoidable.Detoxification
Of course, its very healthy to quit the habit of smoking, drinking, taking drugs etc., no question about it. But Im talking about the definition of detoxing your body in order to attain, maintain, or improve your overall physical health.
I know I keep banging on about the amount of toxins that are in the environment these days, but unfortunately it is true and unavoidable in some cases. For instance, living in the city for some people is unavoidable. This is where they have grown up, where their families, where the jobs are, and its very difficult to up sticks and move to a healthier climate. But, if you look at the bigger picture, there are plenty of toxins that can find their way into your body which are completely avoidable.
Detoxification diets should be about reducing the overall amount of poisons that you allow into your body. Many doctors, scientists, or dieticians dispute the need for anyone to undergo a detoxification diet. Many of these so-called experts will say that there is a lack of coherent rationale or that there is no supporting evidence. Now, while I would agree that there are some detox diets which are plainly stupid and quite frankly dangerous, I think that a body cleansing technique which involves eliminating foods which have been adulterated with chemicals and additives in the modern-day manufacturing process and substituting them with natural, whole, clean foods is going to benefit anybody who uses it.
As an aside, please dont think that just because the word detox, or detoxification, or detoxify is part of a product name or product description that is going to do you any good. The Internet is teaming with useful information about these products. You can read up about any ingredient and find out whether it is going to be good for you or bad for you. Its as simple as that, read the label and get intimate with the products that you eat! Dont treat your body like a trashcan; be very selective about what you are putting into it.
A large chunk of the food that we eat contains chemicals and additives can I prove that these chemicals and additives are bad for you? The answer to that is no, I cant. But can anybody tell you that these additives are good for you, I dont think so! One of the reasons why manufacturers place additives into food is to increase the shelf life of the product. Another reason is to enhance the taste or look of the product. The reason why they do this is to increase the profit margin. The longer a product can stay on the shelves the less waste there is and therefore the more profit that can be made overall. The more appealing a product is the more people will buy it, ergo more profits for the manufacturer. Common sense should tell you that what is good for profits is not necessarily good for health.
Our bodies are very good at eliminating toxins, of that there is no doubt. The organs inside of each and every one of us that are responsible for this have evolved since the dawn of the human race, if they hadnt we wouldnt be here, its as simple as that. But, the environmental toxins that primitive man was exposed to when not that different to those of 100 to 200 years ago. The sheer bombardment of toxins that we are exposed to these days is on a different level altogether. Evolution takes thousands of years to happen. How many more additives are in our food now as compared to 100 years ago, or 50 years ago even? How much more artificial fertilizer is used today compared to 100 years ago, or 50 years ago even? It seems that pollution is everywhere. Just look at the amount of allowable food additives that there are (1). Can our bodies have adapted so quickly to this increase?
There are definitely plenty of scam artists out there who are trying to part you with your money on the basis of this fact by offering you Detox Eye Goggles or Fantastic Super Duper Easy to Swallow Wonder Detoxmogrification Capsules That Will Have You as Clean as a Whistle in 40 Seconds, Im plenty of people who are gullible (or frightened) enough to purchase. But also, there are many experts who will tell you that you have no need for detoxification. Let me give you one example. This is a quote from the Irish Examiner dated Wednesday, January 4, 2006:
SCIENTISTS yesterday warned the public that adopting New Year detox products and diets is pointless. The Sense About Science group, a charitable trust which works to ensure accurate scientific and medical information is available to the public, said a glass of tap water and an early night were the best remedies. (2)
The Sense about Science Group sounds like somebody you can trust, right? The fact that they are a charitable trust also adds to that feeling, correct? And of course the fact that they work to ensure that accurate scientific and medical information is available to the public should really develop your sense that these are a trustworthy bunch of folks.
A little digging around revealed that Sense about Science is a pro GM group. And most of the members of the Board of Trustees and the advisory Council of this group are proponents of genetically modified foods (3). Now, Im not against GM foods in the right circumstances. But, in order to trust an opinion it has to be unbiased. Just because somebody has got the title doctor or professor it does not mean that they should automatically be trusted, that they are unbiased, that they are not under the influence of one profit-making machine or another.
The article finishes with this quote: “The detox fad or fads, as there are many methods is an example of the capacity of people to believe in and pay for magic despite the lack of any sound evidence.”
If something sounds like magic and then the claim is a probably not true and the product is more than likely not going to work for you. What Im advocating is taking your nutrition seriously and taking responsibility for the things that you consume.
IT IS ALL ABOUT TRUST. Dont eat anything unless you can trust the ingredients. Detoxification should be about avoidance first and foremost. Detoxify your diet!
